We usually advise that, as well as taking appropriate antibiotics, patients should abstain from sexual intercourse during the treament period. This will normally ensure that the patient is adequately treated. Not all antibiotics prescribed are so effective so patients might be asked to return after treatment has been completed so that a test can be done to check that the infection is clear. IT IS ESSENTIAL that partner(s) of the person infected is/are also treated and that they have no sex during the treatment period. If not then the infection can be passed back and forth. If you or a partner are in any doubt, please chack back with the health adviser or the doctor who prescribed the treatment before recommecing sexual intercourse.
