Hi Jerry, Your friend was right, there are some infections which one can catch through performing oral sex. But this shouldn't put you off oral. It is not uncommon for Gonorrhoea to be carried in the throat but is only caught by giving a man 'head', so women and gay men are at risk. Herpes can also be caught when giving oral sex. Most people would not consider using condoms or other rubber barriers for oral sex. So you need to decide whether it is worth the risk. However, the risks are not high. Oral sex is not an efficient way for HIV to be communicated.
